Dieppe Raid Wreath Laying
In Commemoration of the Dieppe Raid — All Are Welcome
Branch 68 of the Royal Canadian Legion invites the community to join us at the Penetang Cenotaph on August 19, 2025, as we honour and remember the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of Canadian soldiers who took part in the Raid on Dieppe on August 19, 1942.
Background & Significance:
• Nearly 5,000 of the 6,100 troops who participated in Operation Jubilee, “The Dieppe Raid” were Canadian, making this one of Canada’s most significant, and costly, wartime actions.
• Of those who embarked, approximately 3,367 became casualties either killed, wounded, or taken prisoner, including 916 Canadian lives lost.
• The lessons learned that day for preparatory bombardment, surprise, proper intelligence, and beach landing tactics, influenced greatly Allied planning for D-Day and future amphibious operations.
• Though the raid ended in tragedy, it provided a powerful symbol and a lasting legacy that shaped Canada’s wartime journey and its contributions to eventual Allied victory.
Wreath Laying Details:
• Date: August 19, 2025
• Time: 11:00 AM
• Location: Penetang Cenotaph, Penetanguishene, ON
All are welcome to attend as we lay a wreath in solemn remembrance and gratitude.
